What to Wear to Universal Studios Orlando
Footwear
First of all, comfortable shoes are a must — you’ll be walking for miles across all the Universal parks! Also consider moisture-wicking socks to ensure maximum comfort.
Clothing
Orlando can get hot, so dressing for the weather is key. Think breathable fabrics like cotton or moisture-wicking athletic wear. And don’t forget, if you’re planning on going on water rides, you will get drenched! So quick-dry clothes or a change of clothes can be a lifesaver.
If you’re planning a trip outside of the summer months, know that mornings and evenings can feel cool, so a light jacket can come in handy, too.
What should I take with me to Universal Studios Orlando?
In addition to the comfortable shoes and breathable clothes, here’s a packing list of additional items you’ll want to bring to Universal Studios in Orlando:
- Sunscreen: Florida sun is no joke! Reapply throughout the day.
- Sunglasses and hats with visors: Helps avoiding the sun’s glare and being able to see where you’re walking during the daytime.
- Leak-proof water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial. There are refill stations around the park to refill a water bottle you bring in. Otherwise, there are plastic water bottles for sale pretty much everywhere, but $4 per bottle can add up.
- Portable phone charger: Between snapping photos, occupying yourself while waiting in line for rides and using the Universal app, your phone’s battery will drain fast. A small portable charger will definitely come in handy.
- Poncho: If rain is in the forecast (which is common, especially in the summer), a lightweight poncho keeps you dry.
- Umbrella: Some days you may want to skip out on the plastic poncho and just use an umbrella. It’s about having options!
- Hand sanitizer: This is a must! You’ll be touching all sorts of surfaces in a crowded place like Universal, so you’ll want to use hand sanitizer before snacking or eating meals to avoid catching a cold.
- Swimsuit: If you’re going to the Universal Volcano Bay water park.
- Pain-killer medicine: Call me old-fashioned, but for me this is another must. Universal can be hot, loud, and hectic. Whether I’m treating a headache or foot ache, I always prefer to have this on hand rather than go without it.
If you are traveling with children
Don’t forget about these items from your packing list for Universal Studios if you’re traveling to Orlando with younger children:
- Strollers: Universal offers stroller rentals near the park entrances. However, availability can be limited during peak times, and rental strollers may not have the same features as your personal one.
- Snacks: Pack a variety of non-perishable snacks to keep energy levels up and avoid frequent purchases.
- Change of Clothes: Accidents happen, and some attractions involve water. Having a spare set of clothes can be a lifesaver.
- Kid-friendly sunscreen: Sometimes shade isn’t available. Apply sunscreen regularly, and consider hats and sunglasses for added protection.
Can I bring a backpack into Universal Studios?
Yes, you can bring a backpack! In fact, a small backpack, crossbody bag, or fanny pack is super convenient for carrying your essentials around the park. However, keep in mind that for many thrill rides, you’ll need to store your bag in a locker. There are free lockers near these rides, but they’re small — just big enough for essentials, so a smaller bag rather than a full-scale backpack will be easier to manage.
Is Universal Studios cashless?
Universal accepts cash and credit cards. You can also use “Universal Pay” which lets you link your credit card in the Universal app and purchase food and merchandise without waiting in line.
What can you not bring to Universal Studios Orlando?
Universal Studios has some restrictions on what you can bring into the park, and you have to pass through security before you’re able to enter. Here are a few things that aren’t allowed:
- Outside food and large coolers. A few small snacks are fine, but meals and big coolers aren’t permitted.
- Alcohol and glass bottles
- Weapons
- Suitcases or bags with wheels
- Folding chairs
Additional Tips for First-Time Visitors
There are a few things to do in advance to make the most of your trip to Universal Studios, aside from the items in my packing list. So to make the most of your trip, here are a few final suggestions.
Download the Universal app. It’s a lifesaver for checking wait times, navigating the park, and mobile ordering. Most importantly, you can load your tickets onto the app enter the parks faster.
Consider purchasing an Express Pass. This is something you can purchase in addition to your park entry ticket, and it allows you to enter a special line at rides for a much shorter wait time. In my opinion, it is worth buying the Unlimited Express Pass which lets you skip an unlimited number of lines.
Check park hours since they vary every day, and you may want to use the opening and closing times to get a general idea of when and where to have meals like dinner.
